My family owns a small, two-acre plot of land in Maharashtra, right next to National Highway 211. The National Highway Authority is acquiring a 15-meter strip of our land for the new highway expansion. However, under the 1956 National Highway Act, they are also claiming a 75-foot ‘prohibited zone’ along the highway, which means they won’t compensate us for that land. This leaves us with almost nothing after the acquisition. Is it fair that they take this additional land without compensation, even though it significantly impacts our livelihood?
