Kolkata, July 22: The Calcutta High Court Bar Association has announced a boycott of all judicial proceedings in response to the alleged assault of a lawyer by a police officer. The incident occurred on July 21, 2024, at around 5:00 pm when the lawyer arrived at the Nepalganj Police outpost under Bishnupur Police Station to assist his client.
According to a notice dated July 22, the Bar Association reported that Sub-Inspector Sudipto Sanyal continued to assault the lawyer, who subsequently required medical treatment at Amtala Rural Hospital’s emergency ward. The notice further alleged that the sub-inspector falsely implicated the lawyer under Section 292 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and threatened to fabricate additional charges involving narcotics.
The assaulted lawyer has lodged a written complaint with the Director General, Inspector General, Superintendent of Police, and the Investigating Officer, including medical documents and a request to preserve CCTV footage from the Nepalganj Police outpost.
The lawyer, a member of the High Court Bar Association, prompted an urgent General Body meeting based on the Secretary’s complaint. After reviewing the written complaint, medical records, and email correspondence sent to police authorities, the General Body unanimously resolved to abstain from judicial proceedings.
The resolution stated:Â
“We shall not participate in judicial proceedings before this Hon’ble Court until and unless the delinquent police officer is suspended immediately and appropriate measures are initiated against the police personnel responsible for manhandling the advocate.”
This boycott reflects the Bar Association’s demand for swift action against the involved police officers to ensure justice for their assaulted colleague.
