What Is FASTag?
FASTag is an electronic toll collection system in India, operated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). It employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments directly from the prepaid or savings account linked to it.
FASTag is a prepaid rechargeable RFID tag that is affixed to the vehicle’s windscreen. When the vehicle passes through a toll plaza, the FASTag is detected by RFID readers and the toll amount is deducted automatically from the linked account.
Here is more on how to apply for a FASTag.
Which Law Is FASTag Governed By?Â
FASTag is governed by the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008 and the National Highways Authority of India Act, 1988. The National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008 provide the legal framework for collecting tolls on national highways, including the use of FASTag for electronic toll collection. The National Highways Authority of India Act, 1988 established the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) which is responsible for the development, maintenance and management of national highways in India. NHAI has implemented the FASTag system across national highways.

What Can One Do If Their FASTag Is Blacklisted?Â
If authorities have blacklisted your FASTag, it means they have temporarily deactivated your tag, preventing its use for toll payments at toll plazas.
This can happen due to several reasons:
- Insufficient funds in your FASTag account
- Incomplete or unverified KYC documentation
- Discrepancies between vehicle details provided and the national vehicle registry
- Technical errors or glitches in the system
- Violations or offences registered against your vehicle by law enforcement agencies
To reactivate a blacklisted FASTag:
- Ensure your FASTag account is adequately funded with at least the minimum required balance
- Log into your FASTag portal and check the status. If still blacklisted, contact customer support
- Provide the FASTag details and transaction evidence to the customer support to resolve the issue
Always maintain sufficient balance in your FASTag account to avoid future blacklistings and ensure a smooth journey on India’s highways
