Push For CNAP Caller ID
The Supreme Court has asked the Union government to respond to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) urging the swift implementation of the Calling Name Presentation Service (CNAP). The PIL to push for CNAP caller highlights the need for this feature to tackle the growing issues of spam calls and cyber fraud effectively.
What Is CNAP?
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) introduced CNAP to display a caller’s name on the recipient’s phone. Unlike apps like Truecaller, which rely on crowd-sourced data that can be inaccurate, CNAP aims to provide verified caller identification.
Why The PIL Was Filed
Bengaluru-based petitioner Gowrishankar filed the PIL due to delays in CNAP’s implementation. The plea emphasizes that, despite its importance in combating cyber fraud, there has been no clear timeline or progress from the Department of Telecom and TRAI over the past 2.5 years.
Supreme Court’s Action
A bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar issued a notice on January 15, seeking an explanation from the authorities. The PIL demands that CNAP be rolled out within three months. It also calls for an efficient administrative setup, integration with the Cybercrime Reporting Portal, and measures to address fraudulent calls.
Conclusion
The PIL underscores the urgency of implementing CNAP to safeguard users from rising cyber threats. The Supreme Court’s intervention could pave the way for a more secure and spam-free telecom environment.
